Addictions can be a major stumbling block for those who are on the Spiritual Path of Self-Transcendence. Get the truth and free yourself from them.
There are many things that a person can become addicted to that can get in the way of your Spiritual Growth. When you are on the Spiritual path, it's a good idea to stay non-attached to the things that are of this world.
Remember, Jesus said that we can be in this world, but we do not need to be of this world. Addictions are of this world, so for those who are on the Spiritual path would want to gradually become un addicted to everything this world has to offer us.
When we allow ourselves to become addicted to the things of this world, we become slaves to those things, which is a stumbling block for those who are on the Spiritual Path. Part of the Spiritual path is about being non attached to the things of this world, and how can we be non attached when we are addicted to things such as mind altering drugs or other things that can get in our way while being on the spiritual path.
I remember watching the news coverage when Hurricane Katrina blew through New Orleans, it left a lot of people homeless and those who could not get out of the City either ended up at the Super dome, on the Bridge, or at the Convention Center. None of these people could go back home to get any of their belongings, and most could not go to the stores as the stores were either closed or empty from the looters that had ransacked them. These people were stuck at those three locations with just the clothes on their backs and the little they were able to take with them.
They were stuck at those three locations for days after the hurricane had passed through and after the levees had breached due to Katrina's storm surge. They had no outside help for days afterwards and they were literally on their own to fend for themselves. As I watched the news coverage, I noticed that most of the people that were interviewed were addicted to something and were forced to go cold turkey.
Could you imagine losing your home, and having no place to go but being stuck with hundreds of people for days who are going through addiction withdrawals from cigarettes, prescription drugs, illegal drugs, Alcohol and God knows what else. On top of it you have no place to go, you're hungry, thirsty, tired, scared, and all you can do is wait.
Most of the illnesses that the people were going through seemed to be from addiction withdrawals, and hopefully they realized that maybe it's a good idea to give up all the things they had been addicted to before as they could see what happens to a person when they are going through the withdrawals. Its a nightmare going through addiction withdrawals.
You are a Child of God, who has Free Will and part of having Free Will is making choices. When we are under the influence of Addictions, we give up some of our Free Will to those addictions. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
Lets say you smoke and you want to quit smoking. You decide that the cigarette you're smoking now is your last cigarette and so you finish it and put it out. You feel that you can do it and you're using your Free Will to give it up, to take back your control and be free from the cigarettes for good.
Thirty minutes goes by and your body is starting to get low on nicotine, and you realize that your body is needing nicotine. We can make the choice to light up another cigarette and give it what it wants, but then on the other hand, it's our body and we made the Free Will choice to not smoke any more. An hour goes by and your body is really starting to put up a fight with you. Two hours goes by and you feel like you're going to go crazy if you don't give your body what it wants, because you know what will cause for that feeling in your body to go away, but you have to make the choice whether to light up or to not light up.
I want you to ask yourself this, are you going to give up your Free Will to the demands of your body of what it wants, or are you going to be determined to give your body what you want it to have? Remember, you are a Spiritual Being having a material experience, you are in this world and have chosen not to be of this world. You know your body wants what is of this world, but the Conscious you, the Spirit You, has decided to be in control of your body instead of it be in control of you. So, you have to make the choice to give in to the control of the addiction or are you going to overcome the addiction.
You see how it is when we have addictions to the things of this world, the addictions make our choices for us. When we give up any kind of addiction, we must make the choice to use our Free Will and take back our Control over the body as well as the mind, no matter how much our bodies put up a fight against us. We are an Individualization of God and when we know that, we have the power on our side to take back control of our lives and we are the ones who make the choices, not the addictions any more.
Those who were stuck in New Orleans after the Hurricane blew through did not make the choice to go cold turkey from their addictions, the environment made that choice for them. The conscious them knew they did not make a choice to quit the addictions, but their bodies did not know that. So their bodies fought back and those who were going through addiction withdrawals were ill from it. They were not in control of their bodies or their minds as their bodies were putting up a fight.
When you have addictions to the many different things this world has to offer us, we give up our control to them things. I don't need to mention what we can become addicted to, because you know what you might be addicted to and the inner you probably nags at you to give them addictions up. We know at an inner level that certain things we might be addicted to is not good for our health, and definitely not good when we are on the spiritual path.
So, we must make the decision to take back control of our lives and part of that is giving up the addictions we may have in our lives. God will not do the work for us, as we have Free Will. We used our Free Will to take part in the things that we became addicted to, so it's our responsibility to eradicate addictions from our lives.
When your mind and body are free from the addictions, you will be in control of your life and will have taken a very large step on the spiritual path.
When I was first introduced to the Ascended Master teachings, I learned that addictions from my life had to go, but I just was not ready to let them go yet. I worked on many other areas of my life like learning from my past mistakes and working on not repeating them mistakes. I mean, all you can do is live your life the best you can and take the steps you are ready for when on the Spiritual path. And the addictions I had was one of the things I put off, and just when I thought I was in the clear of being able to keep some of the addictions, those addictions came back around, and I was basically forced to face them and take the steps to eradicating them from my life.
It wasn't that I was forced, it is my goal to reach full Christhood, and no one can reach Full Christhood and have addictions to anything in this world. So, I started off giving up the little things I was addicted to, and giving myself time to completely be non attached to one addiction at a time before I moved on to eradicating another addiction.
So, if you decide that you're ready to begin giving up addictions in your life. The best way I found is giving up the little things we are addicted to first. I'm not talking about prescription medications, so please continue taking them. What I'm talking about are the things we get addicted to that are unneeded such as nicotine, caffeine, Alcohol, sugar, chocolate, things like that. These are some of the things we take into our bodies that we become addicted to that our bodies do not need. If you do a research on the things I just listed, you'll see that they are harmful to our bodies.
What we do to our bodies reflects how we feel about God that is within us, who created us. Our body is our temple and we need to treat it with Divine Love. How will any of us grow on the Spiritual path and claim to be spiritual and at the same time consume those things that harms our bodies?
So, we take one step at a time and we work to eradicate each addiction from our lives, giving us plenty of time to completely overcome one addiction before we move onto eradicating another one. And we take the appropriate steps to becoming addicted free.
I had given up sugar about 2 years ago, and I gave up cigarettes about 8 months ago. What helped me quit the smoking addiction was I went back on sugar. It's kind of odd how I did that, which is give up one addiction and than use that thing I was addicted to to overcome another addiction. But you know, it worked for me to give up Smoking. What I did, I had bought a bag of hard candy and every time I wanted a cigarette, I would suck on a piece of candy instead. So, once I was finally free from the withdrawals, I gave up the hard candy. I had no withdrawals from the sugar that was in the candy. And ever since, I have not had cravings for either.
It let me know that we can use whatever method we need to to overcome addictions in our lives, but what we don't want to do is make a new addiction while overcoming an old addiction. Which I could have become re addicted to sugar again with how I quit smoking, but lucky for me, I didn't.
When we are free from addictions, we will be more Spiritually minded and we will be able to be in control of our lives, and be More free to be who we are. We are I AM and when we are non-attached to the things of this world, we become More I AM.
Being on the Spiritual path we are always transcending ourselves to be More Spiritually minded Beings, and when we allow addictions to come between us and our Freedom, we become Less spiritually minded Beings, we become Less I AM.
So, to be Addiction free Beings, we must make the choice to Be free from Addictions, or not to Be free from addictions. The choice you make will either take you higher up in consciousness, or lower in consciousness.
